Steps from the very birthplace of hockey’s Holy Grail
The Lord Stanley’s Gift monument will be located at the entrance of Ottawa’s Sparks Street Mall. It will face Confederation Square and the National War Memorial.
This prime piece of real estate is 50 metres west of the very spot on which Lord Stanley announced his intention to offer a challenge cup (what would become known as the Stanley Cup®) as the symbol of hockey excellence in Canada.
His Excellency’s historic gift to hockey, Canada and Canadians was made on the evening of March 18, 1892 at a dinner organized by the Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association in the Russell House Hotel.
Alas, the legendary hotel no longer exists. It was expropriated in 1928 by the Government of Canada to create Confederation Square.
