LORD STANLEY’S GIFT MONUMENT PUBLIC ART COMPETITION FINALISTS DESIGNS UNVEILED
OTTAWA – At 5:00 p.m. September 22, 2016 the eight Finalists designs in the national design competition for a monument to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup were made public.
The unveiling took place at an Exposition / Vernissage at the Canada Council for the Arts, Âjagemô Gallery, 150 Elgin Street, Ottawa. The Exposition will continue on Friday September 23, 2016.
The eight Finalists were selected from the forty entries reviewed by a jury of eminent Canadians, highly respected in the fields of public art, culture, history, and hockey.
Representatives of the eight Finalist Design Teams were at the Exposition to present their design proposals to the public, using videos and maquettes.
The designs may be viewed on the competition website: lordstanleysgift.com
Lord Stanley’s Gift Memorial Monument Inc. warmly invites the public to share its views on the designs by emailing comments to email@example.com. The deadline for comments is October 7, 2016.
The winning design will be announced by the Board of LSMMI on October 25, 2016 on the advice of the Jury.
The monument will be donated to the City of Ottawa and unveiled in December 2017 in downtown Ottawa at the corner of Elgin and Sparks Streets, just steps from the site where Lord Stanley of Preston (the 6th Governor General of Canada) gifted the Stanley Cup on March 18, 1892.
The monument unveiling will be part of the 2017 celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary, the 125th anniversary of Lord Stanley’s original gift, the 100th anniversary of the National Hockey League, and the 25th anniversary of the Senators.
The monument is sponsored by Lord Stanley’s Gift Memorial Monument Inc. (LSMMI), a non-profit charitable organization, with assistance from the Department of Canadian Heritage, Ottawa Senators, National Hockey League, and the City of Ottawa.
